And Then There Were Four

The Mets swept the Dodgers this week, and are now one big step closer to the World Series. My favorite thing about the playoffs so far is seeing them improvise in response to each setback. With two starting pitchers out with injuries, it was really cool that the rookie, John Maine, and the veteran, Tom Glavine, both did so well in Games 1 and 2, respectively. As for Game 3… what’s up with those Dodgers fans? They only seemed to cheer when their team was doing well- isn’t that exactly the opposite role of the fans? Shouldn’t they be providing even greater energy and support when their team is down?

On the other hand, I felt no small amount of schadenfreude seeing the Yankees embarrass themselves so badly against the Tigers. That whole “buy the championship” strategy has been working out great for them these last few years…

With only two weeks left until the World Series, it looks like we may be watching it in or around Auckland after all.

Lets Go Mets!

LETS GO METS!

Checking the MLB standings today, I noticed that the New York Mets are currently the best team in the country, and have won 9 of their last 10 games. My support of the team has more to do with family tradition than former proximity, but since starting to sport a Mets hat regularly I’ve noticed more people wearing them, including 3 at the Portland Brewfest and one in this week’s Portland Mercury (a local news rag). Do the Mets have a small but dedicated fanbase here in Portland?

With so few regular season games left, the Mets are in good shape to make the playoffs. Then, who knows? Their last regular season game is on October 1st and the World Series is on October 21st, so it should be clear by time we leave if I’ll be searching for a pub owned by an American expatriate once we arrive in New Zealand or not.
